Disaster Description
Cameron Parish, in the southwest corner of Louisiana next to Texas , was known as a beach and fishing destination before it was devastated by Hurricane Rita in September 2005. One year after Rita hit it was estimated that 40% or less of the population had returned to their homes.
MDS has started repairing and rebuilding homes in partnership with Faith Share, an ecumenical group that is working as the Long Term Recovery Committee.
MDS Response
With God's help MDS completed it's 2008 work in Cameron. During the stay there volunteers completed numerous repair jobs and four new homes in partnership with Faith Share, an ecumenical group that is working as the Long Term Recovery Committee. Since opening the project in January many willing volunteers worked hard to help restore hope to Cameron and it's surrounding communities.
If you were to drive a car down almost any road in Louisiana in the springtime, there is one memorable sight.... Azaleas in bloom. These gorgeous shrubs grace almost every home from the poorest shack to the finest...
