Winter Scheduling for Youth Put on Hold
As the fall project season begins and we begin to schedule volunteers for winter, MDS is announcing a temporary policy change for scheduling volunteers at MDS sites.
Mennonite Disaster Service is committed to service projects that provide meaningful work for all of our constituents. MDS does not currently have projects designed for youth and families. We are looking at ways to have projects that will be in compliance with Child Labor Laws and provide a meaningful service opportunity.
In order to be in compliance with US Child Labor Laws, MDS will not schedule volunteers aged 17 and under at any of our projects. Although MDS has volunteers rather than employees, we are expected to be in compliance with the US Child Labor Law. The Child Labor Law allows children to work for family farms and businesses, but restricts other work, including volunteering. The law restricts children from using scaffolding, working on roofs, using power tools and excavating.
The age restriction at projects is a temporary measure and we fully intend to develop new service opportunities that will engage our youth.
