Weekly Report from La Crete

This past week we had a great group from Coaldale, Alberta. One crew completed the metal siding on cabins one, two and three, and with several railings installed, those cabins are done and ready for use. Cabins seven and eight are now framed and getting decks and railings. We also installed soffit and fascia on many of the cabins. All eight cabins now have the metal roofing as well.

Despite almost a full week of rain and chilly weather, a lot of work was accomplished. We also had a lot of fun – on Monday we went to the La Crete rodeo. The bucking events were a favorite, although one unfortunate cowboy had to be taken to the hospital after a pretty bad fall. On Tuesday everyone spent the evening with the local EMC youth group. Wednesday evening a few Bergthaler youth came to the camp and we played some friendly games of planned volleyball and unplanned “who can put the most sand down others’ pants”. Thursday and Friday evenings we played card games and enjoyed homemade hot chocolate. We only worked half a day Friday, and in the afternoon, several youth and long-termers toured the local sawmill, while the rest checked out “downtown” La Crete or tried their luck at fishing the Peace River. And of course the food, delicious as always, was a favorite among the hard-working youth.

It was a successful week all in all, with much accomplished on the cabins and friendships made and strengthened. God was glorified in it all, and His presence was evident in everything from the beautiful flowers everywhere to the laughter of the youth to the songs of worship sung every morning before work. His work is being done up here in northern Alberta with passion and delight!

Blessings from La Crete,
Garry and Anne, Bert and Doris, Amanda, Oliver

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.
