Flooding threatens Red River Basin in Canada and United States

Due to spring run-off and current weather conditions, Manitoba, Canada communities, especially those along the Red River basin, are preparing for possible flooding.

In the United States, the Red River is expected to crest in Fargo, North Dakota this weekend at 37-40 feet. Residents of Fargo, Grand Forks and other smaller communities along the Red River are already sand bagging and fortifying existing dike structures.

In Canada, local government officials in Winnipeg along with the non-government organizations (NGO'S) are on high alert as preparations for potential flooding in Manitoba are underway. Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) is an active member of the NGO group.

MDS and the NGO partner organizations are ready to assist local government personnel to support those in need. Direct your inquiries about volunteer opportunities in Canada to the Canada MDS office at 204-261-1274. Monetary donations may be sent to the Canada office or you may donate online.

Volunteer

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.

Donate

Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
